Camas can sometimes be confused with wild onion. And like every onion, its meaning has layers you can peel back and learn a thing or two about! Camas is an indigenous “first food” and is thus a spiritual connection to the land and its people. Its bulbs taste like baked figs or sweet potatoes, and in fact, many Northwest tribes used camas as their main sweetening agent in cooking. Its pretty purple blossom represents resilience, heritage and the relationship between communities to each other and to the land.
